According to NR 06 item 6.1.1, it is considered combined individual protection equipment all equipment composed by several devices, which are associated by the manufacturer against one or more risks that may occur simultaneously, and that is likely to threaten the safety and health at work.
The safety harness and the fall arrest equipment (lanyard and fall arrest device) used to protect the user are considered combined PPE, since there is no possibility of using only one of the devices and ensure protection against falls.
To acquire the CA from the Ministry of Labor, all the equipment is sent together for certification tests; a given company will only send its own equipment for approval, for this reason it is mandatory to use equipment from the same manufacturer. By consulting their CAs with the Ministry of Labor, we find which equipment is related and can be combined.
The lanyards that can be used with a Safety Harness are presented in the CA of the Harness, but this information may lead people to believe that only the Safety Harness and the Lanyard must be combined. However, all fall protection equipment must be considered a combined PPE. To see which Safety Harness can be used with the Fall Arrest device, you must consult the CA of the Fall Arrest device, which will contain the list of Safety Harnesses tested to be used together, i.e., both the Safety Harness and the Lanyard and Fall Arrest device must be combined.
The fall protection system must be composed by anchorage point, fall arrest system (Fall Arrest Devie, Single Leg Lanyard or Twin Leg Lanyard) and Safety Harness.
