1. Confined space recognition and awareness
Worker training is essential for recognizing what constitutes a confined space and the hazards that can be found in them. This training should emphasize that the death of the employee is the likely result of proper precautions that were not taken before entrying the space. Stay vigilant, your life is precious.
2. Testing, assessment, and monitoring
All confined spaces must be tested by a trained and qualified person before entry. This is to determine whether the atmosphere in the space is safe for entry. Testing should be done for oxygen level, flammability, and known or suspected toxic substances. In addition, the confined space should be continuously monitored to determine if the atmosphere has changed due to the work being performed.
3. Rescue
Rescue procedures should be established prior to entry, and should be specific to each type of confined space. A properly trained watchman should be placed in each entry, and he or she should be equipped with rescue equipment – including a backup to the worker in the confined space. And don’t forget, all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) must be in place for a possible emergency.
Important reminder: rescue protocols must be put in practice frequently. Providing an experience that eliminates rescue attempts where the life of the victim, and the rescuer, is put at risk. Ensuring an efficient response in case of emergency.
